Snow Day

What do you do on a snow day? Is it a scramble to get kids to the emergency babysitter? Or get the emergency babysitter to the kids? Is it digging the car out; or helping out neighbors who can’t, move the snow? Do you have the luxury to play in the snow? Maybe it’s binge TV watching time?

Have you ever killed a lion on a snow day? Have you heard of such a thing? One of King David’s “elite warriors” [1 Samuel 23:8 EHV] did just that, among other things…

Benaiah son of Jehoiada, an energetic warrior from Kabze’el, performed great deeds. He struck the two Lions of God from Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a cistern on a snowy day. He killed an impressive Egyptian, who was armed with a spear. Benaiah went down against him with a staff, snatched the spear from the hand of the Egyptian, and killed him with his own spear. These were the accomplishments of Benaiah son of Jehoiada. His reputation equaled that of the Three. He was praised more than the Thirty, but he did not belong to the Three. David placed him over his bodyguard.

However, Benaiah’s story continues as he served King Solomon. 1 Kings 2 is a great bit of drama and intrigue early in Solomon’s reign. Spoiler alert: Benaiah kills three of Solomon’s enemies! Interestingly, the name Benaiah means “Yahweh builds up” not a bad name for a guy who “struck down” a bunch of other guys. It is a very deep dive in Israel’s history, if you would care to research it a bit. It is not something that is preached on a Sunday morning.

It might be something you would like to read on a snow day!
