As The Squirrel

As The Squirrel

A reimaging of Psalm 42

Who has observed the deer pant for water?

Only under your watchful eye.

This neighborhood is devoid of deer,

Ah, but be attentive to the squirrel!

As the squirrel keeps a close eye on me.

As the squirrel keeps a precautionary distance

A quick sprint and jump to the tree

I will flee as you move

To keep the space between us

I will happily hop away.

Nevertheless, I scurry across the road

Dart out unaware of the looming danger fast approaching

As the squirrel makes it over the curb to safety

Or as the squirrel becomes road squash

Do I really resign my life to your hands?

As the squirrel gathers and squirrels away food for winter

I continue to plan knowing the days grow shorter

My plans want to include you

I know I had you in my hands, once

Where did I put you?

I must dig to uncover you in my dead of winter

As the squirrel, I will happily bound and search.

As the deer pants for water

Will I remember the water of my baptism?

The Living Water bubbling up to eternal life.

Will I remember it is you that holds me?

Your nail pierced hands embrace me.

Every animal in the forest is yours,

The squirrels on a thousand mountains.

Call, gather, and enlighten your squirrels.
